What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin custom shells bonded to the front surface of the teeth to adjust their shape, shade and alignment. They are used to address discolouration, chips, wear or minor spacing on healthy front teeth. Because a thin layer of enamel is removed to fit them, veneers are a permanent change, so they are planned carefully rather than rushed.

Treatment starts with an assessment and a digital smile preview, which lets you see a proposed result before anything begins. Your dentist selects a shade to suit your face and existing teeth, with the aim of a natural appearance rather than a single bright white. The plan is discussed and adjusted with you before any preparation.

What to expect during treatment

Treatment is usually completed across two or three visits over roughly three to five days. After the preview and shade selection, the teeth are lightly prepared and temporary veneers are placed, then the final porcelain veneers are bonded at a later visit. Downtime is minimal. Some people notice mild sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days after preparation and after bonding, which usually settles on its own. Your dentist provides clear aftercare instructions before you leave.

Are veneers right for everyone?

Veneers are not suitable for everyone. They involve removing enamel and are irreversible, and they are not the answer for active decay, gum problems or significant bite issues, which are treated first. At assessment your dentist may suggest alternatives such as teeth whitening, bonding or orthodontics where these fit your goals better.
